Hollyhock

FEMALE AMBITION; FRUITFULNESS

Until the end of the nineteenth century, no English cottage garden would dare to exist without a few ranks of hollyhocks blooming among the roses and Canterbury bells. Even today, avid gardeners have hollyhocks in bloom so that children can make dolls out of toothpicks and flowers.

At one time, syrups were made from the roots to treat sore throats and bad coughs. This trait, along with the many seeds each ripening flower produces, contributes to the message of fruitfulness. Among its many colors, there is a white variety that represents female ambition, a salute that in Victorian times was not that apt, but today offers positive recognition.
